Living Christ’s Love in a Small-Town Church

Who We Are

We are part of a two church parish in south central Iowa with Attica United Methodist Church just 5 minutes south of us. Worship services and bible studies are shared between our two churches. Our parish offers a welcoming environment for all people to join us and become part of the family!

Zion United Methodist Church invites you to join our family that is filled with the love of God where we will support, nurture, and accept you with the love of God. You will find a warm and welcoming church family who have chosen to follow Jesus Christ and to support one another in their journey of faith.

We strive to live by Christ example, sharing his love for others in the world around us and supporting our small town. We are a small country church that support and love one another at all times. We offer a variety of ministries to help you grow in your faith through worship, fellowship, study, and outreach. All are welcome here and we encourage you to join us as a part of the family!

To do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God. (Micah 6:8)

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We’ve put together answers to some of the things people often ask before visiting Zion location.

We are located on Highway G62 on the edge of Pershing. Our church has a parking lot located outside the main entrance and a cemetery located on the church grounds. You can enter through the main doors up the stairs in front of the church or use the ramp to enter through the side door.

We alternate worship service with Attica UMC in each Sunday. Our services are mostly traditional with hymns from the United Methodist Hymnal. We do occasionally offer contemporary songs and encourage congregational participation during our prayer time. Our setting is casual and you will find people dressed in anything from jeans to dress clothes.

We offer a toys and games for children to enjoy during service in our side room just off the sanctuary. Children are welcome in service at all times and are invited to join us for our Children's Message during each service.

Our History

The Zion church was founded in 1864. The first church was built with mostly native material in 1864-1865 with a total cost of $1,160 on ground donated by Sam Rogers and his wife Rebecca for the church and the cemetery.

The current church was built west of the first building in 1923-1924 and dedicated on July 24, 1924. A 70th year celebration was held on November 24th, 1935 with over 300 people in attendance. The centennial celebration was held on June 6, 1965.

We are part of a two church parish with Attica UMC. Originally there were three churches in our parish with Olive Chapel UMC which was closed in 2023.
