Walking in Christ’s Love, Together

Who We Are

Attica United Methodist Church invites you to discover God’s love while belonging to a church community that feels like family supporting, nurturing, and sharing the love of God with you at all times. You will find an inviting community of people who have chosen to follow Jesus Christ and to support one another in their journey of faith.

We are part of a two church parish with Zion United Methodist Church in Pershing, Iowa just 5 minutes north of Attica. Our parish enjoys joint worship services and shared bible studies throughout the year. Check out our main page for our worship schedule and upcoming bible studies and events.

We strive to live by Christ example, sharing his love for others in the world around us. We are a small country church that support and love one another at all times. We offer a variety of ministries to help you grow in your faith through worship, fellowship, study, and outreach. All are welcome here and we encourage you to join us as a part of the family!

To equip people to go out into the world, loving their neighbor and serving others through engaging worship, relevant teaching, and a caring community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We’ve put together answers to some of the things people often ask before visiting Attica location.

We are located in the small town of Attica on Highway G76. You can park on our streetside parking offered on three sides of the church. The main entrance faces Attica Street and our side entrance is off the highway with a ramp for handicap accessibility.

We alternate worship service with Zion UMC in Pershing each Sunday. Our services are mostly traditional with hymns from the United Methodist Hymnal. We do occasionally offer contemporary songs and encourage congregational participation during our prayer time. Our setting is casual and you will find people dressed in anything from jeans to dress clothes. When Attica hosts service, coffee time is available before service at 9:30am off the sanctuary where you can enjoy coffee or water and wonderful fellowship.

We offer a nursery for children to enjoy during service that is just off the sanctuary. Children are welcome in service at all times and are invited to join us for our Children's Message during each service.

Our History

The Attica United Methodist Church was finished in 1872. The site of the original building was purchased in 1869 by the trustees of the Methodist Protestant Church. Prior to 1869 it was owned by the United Brethren in Christ Church. The first church was home to 96 members and was constructed from native lumber and a sandstone foundation.

In 1956 the church began extensive remodeling in which an educational wing was added, water system installed, and the basement was lowered and enlarged. Most of the funding for the remodel came from ‘congregational farming’ where the church rented 200 acres of land and the congregation provided the equipment and labor to farm the ground. This occurred for four years during which $10,000 was added to the church building fund.

A Centennial celebration was held in 1972. In 2008 a EF-2 tornado came through Attica causing significant damage to the church. The church was thankfully still standing but received a new roof, siding, and repairs were made to the stained glass windows and other areas of the church.
